Teaching: My teaching interests range across the whole of the electronic engineering and signal processing syllabus in the Department of Engineering Science. I have given, or give, the following lecture courses: Electronic Circuits (1st year), Electronic Instrumentation (2nd year), Digital Systems (2nd year), Signal Processing & Filter Design (3rd year), Medical Electronics (4th year), VLSI Signal Processing (4th year) and Neural Networks (4th year).

Research: My main research interest lies in the development of neural network methods capable of learning how to recognise complex patterns in signals, images or data. I am particularly interested in detecting abnormalities in signals acquired from high-integrity systems such as jet engines or hospital patients. I have led three projects all the way from concept to commercial exploitation: the Sharp LogiCook Microwave Oven (the first of Sharp's products to be developed outside Japan), the QUESTAR sleep analysis system and QUINCE, a jet engine diagnostic system for Rolls-Royce.

QUESTAR was awarded a British Computer Society Medal in 1996. I am also a founder director of two University spin-off companies: Oxford BioSignals and ThirdPhase.
