John Shawe-Taylor was a postgraduate student at Simon Fraser University and Royal Holloway and was awarded a doctorate in combinatorial mathematics in 1986, after which he completed an MSc in the Foundations of Advanced Information Technology at Imperial College, University of London. He was appointed a lecturer in Computer Science at Royal Holloway in 1986. After becoming a Senior Lecturer and then Reader, in 1996 he was promoted to Professor of Computing Science. His main research interests are in computational learning theory, the mathematical analysis of design, and learning in neural nets.
