Wendy Hall
is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton,
UK. She was the founding Head of the Intelligence, Agents, Multimedia
(IAM) Research Group in the Department of Electronics and Computer
Science at Southampton and is currently the Deputy Head of Department.
Her research interests include the development of multimedia information
systems and their applications in education, industry and commerce,
open hypermedia systems and link services, digital libraries,
multimedia databases, content-based retrieval, agent systems and
user interfaces. More information about her research interests

Her group
developed the open hypermedia system, Microcosm, and she is a
director of Multicosm Ltd, now Active Navigation Ltd, the company
through which Microcosm has been commercially exploited. The Microcosm
software was an ITEA'95 award winner and a BCS IT award winner
in 1996. The company has also developed a commercial version of
hypermedia link service for the Web based on IAM's Distributed
Link Service project. The commercial product is known as Webcosm.
Wendy was awarded a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list in
June 2000, and became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering
in the same year.
She regularly speaks at international conferences, and is a member
of a number of editorial boards of journals in her research area,
including IEEE MultiMedia and JoDI. She is currently Vice President
(Knowledge Services) of the BCS and the holder of an EPSRC Senior
Fellowship. She is a member of the EPSRC Council and was a member
of the Technology Foresight ITEC panel from 1995-1998.
She was program
co-chair for ACM Multimedia'96 and '98 and conference co-chair
of ACM Hypertext'97 which was held in Southampton. Wendy is currently
vice chair of the IW3C2 and a member of the ACM Publications Board.
She is a non-executive
director of a number of company boards including Multicosm Ltd,
Itext Ltd, The Company of Biologists, and CA Technology Ltd.
