Dr Cairns
was until recently a senior lecturer with the School of Computing
Science at Middlesex University. He started there in March 1998
having come from The Technology Partnership plc an innovative
engineering company based near Cambridge.
He did his
doctorate with the Maths Institute at Oxford University. It is
in general topology, a rather pure branch of mathematics, and
revels under the title of "Boundary Properties and Construction
Techniques in General Topology".
Dr Cairns has received fast stream funding from the EPSRC for
research into Interactive Presentation of Mathematical Proofs.
He has also done work on markov chains in modelling user interfaces
with Harold Thimbleby and Matt Jones. He is looking at the following,
all with a certain mathematical flavour:
- Genetic
algorithms for maximal cliques
- Fractals
and financial time series
- Mathematical
models of trojan horses
