Igor Aleksander has
researched Artificial Intelligence, Neural Networks and Artificial
Consciousness for the last 40 years. His recent work lies in the
area of Artificial Visual Awareness. He has published over 200
papers in these fields and 11 books including the most recent:
"Impossible Minds" published by Imperial College Press,
1996. In 1998 he was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Academy
of Engineering.
In the 1980s he was responsible for the design of the world's
first neural pattern recognition system (the WISARD), and in 1991
he laid down the principles for the first neural vision machine
which stores visual experience, has mental imagery, plans and
dreams (the MAGNUS). He is currently head of the Neural Systems
Laboratory in the Electrical Engineering Department of Imperial
College, and a Pro-Rector for the College.
Research Interests:
Neuromodelling of the Visual system in primates and the visuo-verbal
system in humans; Models of the effect of anaesthetics on awareness;
The meaning of artificial consciousness; Robots with a representation
of 'self'
How does it feel? models of mental deficits.
